Day 3 // The Meek
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5
Meekness has been defined as having strength under control. A meek person submits themselves to God and trusts Him completely. Meekness denies self, displays gentleness, and demonstrates humility. It, as James 3:13 tells us, is someone who “by his good life shows his works in the meekness of wisdom”. James defines this wisdom from above as “first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy” (v. 17). In a world where taking matters into our own hands is encouraged and commended, meekness urges us to trust God, let go of our rights, and treat others with kindness, patience, love, and grace.
Jesus is our ultimate example of meekness. Quoting from Psalm 37:11, Jesus gave us this beatitude in Matthew 5:5 as a reminder to learn from and live like Him. In Matthew 11:29, Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart.” He finished the verse with “you will find rest for your souls.” Submitting ourselves to learn from Jesus’ ultimate example of meekness grants peace, strength, and security. What an inheritance! Jesus, the one with all authority (Matt. 28:18), who created everything (Col. 1:16), and is equal with the Father (Phil. 2:5-7) exhibited perfect meekness in every way. He is our model through His kind and gracious ministry, His bold and loving confrontation of sin, and His self-controlled and sacrificial suffering for our sins.
Pray:
> That you would submit yourself to God in everything.
> That you would learn true meekness from the life of Jesus.
> That you would demonstrate kindness, grace, boldness, love, and self-control.
