Recently I was asked to share with our whole church the mission and philosophy of our children's ministry - in 3 minutes! Quite a challenge, but definitely a fun one. I'd like to share it here on this blog so it's in a written form for anyone to check out.
Summit Kidz is dedicated to partnering with parents in developing children who understand the nature of God, their relationship to Him, and their purpose in His big story.
1. The Nature of God: In First Look (our preschool ministry), we intend for every child to know that God made them, God loves them, and Jesus wants to be their forever friend. What a difference would be made in the life of a child if they knew these 3 concepts in their hearts by the time they were 5 years old!
2. Their Relationship to God: In Trail 252 (our grade school ministry), our desire is for every 5th grader to 'graduate' knowing that they can trust God no matter what, that God has given them the strength to make wise choices, and that they should treat others the way they want to be treated. These three basics of Luke 2:52 deal with our vertical and horizontal relationships (God and other people).
3. Their purpose in His big story: In LIT (Leaders in Training), 5th-7th graders are trained and discipled to be missionally minded. In accordance with the Great "Co-Mission" in Matthew 28:19, preteens are trained with the assumption they will be missionaries and disciplers.
4. Partnering with Parents: Studies show that parents have about 3000 hours with their children each year, whereas church staff have about 40 hours. Couple that with the Barna study that states that children prefer to hear about the character and nature of God from their parents over any other adult in their lives, we want to maximize our time with children to be the secondary spiritual voice in their lives, not the primary one. Because of this shift, we have taken great steps to resource our parent base with what they need to succeed in discipling kids at home. Take home, written and downloadable materials are available at TSC and on this website. We have also developed strategic events for the sole purpose of championing parents in the discipling process.
Family Worship Productions: Wee Worship (preschool) and Checkpoint (grade school) are interactive services to pull parents into what we talk about on Sunday mornings.
T-Minus 21 Ministries: Events that take place throughout the year intended to help remind parents of their amazingly rewarding responsibility with their children.
