God - Moving to Recreate His Image - Orange Blog # 5

There is an age old debate that affects how I see myself.  Some say I am broken, damaged, faulty.  So I am stuck.  Others say I am unique, special, gifted.  So I can do anything. The controversy sometimes gets heated while parents and leaders get confused.  No one is sure how to move ahead. Some leaders say those who work at building children's self-esteem are raising kids who will exhibit a lifestyle of entitlement and egotism.  Others say those who talk about children being innately bad are raising a generation that feels inferior...

God Made the First Move -Orange Blog 4

God made the first move so you could know Him!  That incites wonder! We all desire to imagine. We all long to dream the impossible. So we search for something to amaze us, something to incite wonder. Regardless of your perspectives on God, religion, or faith, you have to admit that your imagination is drawn to what seems to be miraculous or magical. Consider these scenes that have intrigued millions: 1. Lucy pushes aside a row of winter coats in an old wardrobe and discovers herself on a starlit, snowy night in Narnia. 2. ET and Elliot lift off on a...

Created to Make One Primary Move-Orange Blog 3

If you could get someone to make ONE move, take ONE action, embrace ONE idea - what would it be?  Jesus had an uncanny way of zeroing in on what really mattered.  He had a skill for simplifying whatever the religious leaders complicated.  Most important command?  "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. This is the first and greatest commandment."  Jesus boiled it all down to one command - Love God. Then He added, "The second is like it - Love your neighbor as yourself."  According to Jesus, when...

Wired to Move Relationally - Orange Blog 2

In my recent trip to the Orange Conference (a conference dedicated to family ministry), we discussed aspects of how you are wired to move. God created us that way. There are many aspects of that movement, (to be discussed in the coming weeks) but one critical aspect is relational movement. Just like you are designed to move physically, you're designed to move relationally. You are meant to grow in your relationships with your friends, family, and community. That's why you have to keep cultivating your relational instincts.  You need to keep developing your social intelligence, communication skills,...

Ready to Move? Orange Blog 1

God's move shapes your move, which in turn shapes the lives of those around you. God designed you not only to move, but to move relationally, to move toward Him. We're designed to make one primary move; the most important idea ever to be presented to the human race - "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength."   Before you even take a step, God is making His move toward you to incite wonder, to provoke discovery, and to fuel passion. He moves every day, inviting you into His story of redemption....

Together

For the next few blog posts, I'll be sharing some of the awesome materials I received from the Orange Conference - a conference dedicated to churches and families who are serious about next generation faith and passing a spiritual legacy on to our kids.  Barry Williams, Barry Schnaitman, my son Jake and I spent 4 days together attending breakout sessions and worshipping our amazing God in a phenomenal environment of about 5000 dedicated staff and volunteers.  It was awesome.  Why the color Orange?  Orange is the vibrant color that comes by mixing red (a color that we...

The Wave Jumper

I've almost completed Steven Furtick's book Sun Stand Still, a great read on audacious faith.  There's a particular chapter that really hit home with me as I am letting go of control and turning more and more of my circumstances in life, in faith, over to the Lord's hands. Here is an excerpt from that chapter that I think speaks to all of us who have kids. "Elijah and I had a great time playing Wave Jumper at the beach last week. Here’s a brief description of this sensational new game: I...

But Deliver Us Some Email

A mother was teaching her three-year-old daughter The Lord's Prayer. For several evenings at bedtime, she repeated it after her mother. One night she said she was ready to solo The mother listened with pride, as her daughter carefully said each word right up to the end..."And lead us not into temptation," she prayed, "but deliver us some e-mail, Amen."  There's such a joy (and sometimes hilarity) in parenting, especially when it comes to spiritually training your kids.  It's serious business, but don't ever forget that a 3 year old is a 3 year...

Being Right in the Wrong Way

Great article I read from Carey Nieuwhof, pastor of Connexus Church. How many times in my parenting have I done the right thing by correcting or disciplining, but in the wrong way, either out of anger or frustration? The result could be exasperation in my kids.  My prayer is that I discipline the way the Lord wants -out of love and concern for my kids' well being.   "Sometimes you and I meet people who are right in what they say and believe.  But they have a habit of being right in the wrong way. They’re...

Family Voice

Kim and I have had this conversation on more than one occasion.  Why do we talk to each other and the kids differently than we do people outside our home? Why aren’t we polite, kind, and generous with our words at home when all day long we tend to speak politely with kindness and generosity to others?  I ran across this article from Carey Nieuwhof and thought I’d share it.  Chime in if this speaks to you.  The Scott household has been praying about this and working on it for years now. ...
