I stumbled across an incredible verse today in Psalm 119:130. It claims that:
"The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple"
I don’t know why, but for some reason I love this verse. It might be due to the fact that I hate folding things so anything that opposes folding is a gift from God in my opinion. But seriously though, folding T-shirts is awful. No matter how hard I try, I never fold them right. Something is always uneven, or the shirt sleves never fold quite right, and to top it all off, when I do get ready to wear the shirt there is always a huge wrinkle right down the middle. I would never fold another shirt in my life if my wife wouldn’t disown me.
But back to the subject. Despite my loathing for folding things, I think my appreciation for this verse goes beyond that. As a pastor with very little formal training, I find rest in verses like this and 1 Peter 4:10-11 and 1 Corinthians 1:26-29*. Thankfully, the process of unfolding God’s word gives light, and by the grace of God, the simple (like me) will be given understanding! I may never get a degree from seminary, but I can rest in the light given from the unfolding of God's words. Are you unfolding God’s word by simply turning the pages in your Bible?
**1 Peter 4:10-11
10Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
1 Corinthians 1:26-29
26Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him.**
