Blake Hudspeth's Blog - Graceful Truth

The SSM Mullet!

"I need a haircut that says to the world, 'I know how to balance a checkbook AND jump a Harley over a volcano, wassup?'"

-Billy Ray Cyrus, 1981

And, after hours of blood, sweat, tears...and feather cutting, the mullet was born. Business in the front, party in the back.  The South was never the same, and, although I can't back that story up with facts...I know in my heart that it's true.

This weekend, Antifreeze 2012 became something we never dreamed…the SSM Mullet. And I definitely know the story of how it came to be! Here's the quick recap:

  •  Castle Bluff…AWESOME camp…but not too warm when it's 9 degrees outside with a wind chill of -1
  • When we got there, the heaters had been on full blast all day, PLUS we were plugging in space heaters (and blowing fuses left and right)
  • Friday night, it got down to single digits and the heaters couldn't keep up with the cold
  • But that didn't stop us from having an incredible first session, Nathan James tore it up this weekend! (We'll have 2 of the talks online soon!)
  • However, it did stop us from sleeping incredible :)
  • The next morning, I the thought, "we could all be miserable this weekend and huddle up in a room and burn books to stay warm- The Day After Tomorrow Style...OR we could take the party back to Little Rock."
  • The labor pains of the Mullet's birth were underway
  • After calling our parents to give them a heads up, we decided to transform Antifreeze into DV8
  • Antifreeze in the front, DV8 in the back…the SSM Mullet
  • Usually it takes us weeks to get the 14 houses we need for DV8 lined up…we had all of them within an hour.
  • Daniel Bollen preached his guts out during our morning session about suffering and worship.
  • We cooked up some fajitas for lunch, walked some trails and hung out at Castle Bluff for a while, broke down camp, came to TSC, set it back up, and were ready to go again by 6PM
  • That night, the LORD did things we had been praying He would do for months.  Chains were broken, students were saved, God moved powerfully.
  • When we went to our houses, God continued to do mighty things through many, many conversations between students and leaders.
  • And it was warm.
  • My group was at the GreenHouse in Conway, and, on Sunday morning, we were able to spend an hour listening to one of the students in our Focus Group share his story.  One of my highlights this weekend.
  • We ended the weekend by hearing Nathan speak on sincere vs. insincere worship and praying for one another as we went back to our everyday lives on Sunday morning.
  • If you want to hear more about what some of the students learned/said…check out my Facebook page. A couple have written notes on their highlights from the weekend.  They're hysterical, encouraging, and true.

It was logistically insane, and spiritually incredible! In fact, the craziness just made it that much better. And, yes, it's the one and only SSM Mullet that will ever happen…but it made for one UNFORGETTABLE weekend!

About Blake Hudspeth

A groundhog on crack. That’s the best way to describe the way my mind works. I’m Blake Hudspeth: husband, father, student pastor, and (most importantly) beloved son of the living GOD.
These are my thoughts. I scurry under the ground, pop my head out, look around, then rush down another tunnel and come out again before you can say “razzle dazzle”. My hope is that it will become another way for me to glorify my Father (Philippians 1:20) and chunk stones into the face of giants (Manpurse Slingshot). So thanks for letting me share those thoughts with you…I applaud your astute, blog-supporting readertude.
