"Running down a deer, naked, and biting it to death."
That was what Matt Chandler once sarcastically described as the actions of an “ultimate man”. We laugh (at least I did), but only because there’s a shred of truth hidden in that statement. In our minds, there are certain things we just consider “manly”.
For instance, who’s a manlier man: Wilber Eugene Pickles or Staff Sgt. Maximus Steel Fightmaster?
I don’t have to tell you which guy has a collection of ceramic unicorns and still takes bubble baths, and which one is an ex-Navy SEAL who runs recon/mercenary missions with his supermodel wife while innovating business strategies as the CEO of Google.
But why? Where did we get these grandiose ideas of “manliness” (or, for that matter, “womanliness”)? Is it something that has been woven into our being from creation, or is it something that has been corrupted through our fallen nature?
I think the answer is, “yes”.
This Wednesday (November 9), we’re kicking off a 2 week series called “Grow Up: Conversations on Biblical Manhood & Womanhood”. GOD made man and woman uniquely. He has a standard of “manliness” and “womanliness” that may surprise you.
If you’re a parent of a high school student, BE THERE. We need more fathers, like King David, who look at their sons and say, “Be strong, and show yourself a man”…a statement that was backed up through a lifetime of modeling (though imperfectly) what that looks like.
SIDE NOTE: I want to use some examples for Wednesday night…so, in the “comments” section, write the manliest name you can think of and what makes that man so manly.
Execute! (that is the manlier version of “please do that now”)
